STARK MONUMENT

Historical monument

The heritage plaque and monument represent the culmination of three years of planning and fundraising work by both the Society and the Association, as well as considerable assistance by Chase River Elementary School and the City of Nanaimo.

The plaque and the monument focus on the unique history of Chase River over the past 100 years and feature the story of Louis Stark, an early black settler in this region.

Emily stark

Emma Stark, the first black teacher on Vancouver Island. In August 1874, Emma would be hired to teach school in the North Cedar District.
